Grafton's Second Firehouse

Circa 1909 to Circa 1950

In late 1908 the idea of turning the old public school house into the Village Hall and Engine House is discussed in the Ozaukee News Graphic newspaper. The building served as a school from 1870 to 1906. In spring of 1909, bids were accepted to remodel the building.

In the 1910 Sanborn Fire Insurance map, the second firehouse of the Grafton Fire Department is shown at the corner of Cedar Street and Water Street (what is today the corner of 13th Avenue and Cedar Street).

Listed on the first floor of the building is city hall and the fire department is listed in the basement. A tower is noted for the fire bell and hose maintenance. Additionally the following equipment is listed: 1 gasoline engine, 2 hose carts with 1000' 2-1/2" C. R. L. hose, and 1 hook & ladder truck.

Prior to becoming the firehouse and city hall, the 1904 Sanborn Fire Insurance map listed the building as a public school.
